What is a Student’s ‘Just Right Zone’? | Westcountry Group

Recognise the position or way that individual learners are most productive

This equilibrium is achieved when pupils are in their natural learning spot. For some, this ‘Just Right Zone’ might be working collaboratively with others in a group whilst for others it may be off on their own. When each student is in his or her natural learning zone, they are more engaged, feel more included and get the most out of their learning time at school. Each student has their own unique learning style, which is why the perfect learning environment has three main zones to accommodate each type of learner: Focused, Collaborative and Dynamic Zones.

Focused Zone

This is the area where students who learn best individually naturally gravitate. Although we like to encourage team work and collaboration, studies have shown that there is still a need for 25% of your student space to be individual to accommodate these more intrapersonal students.

Collaborative Zone

Featuring both a semi-collaborative area (for groups of 2-3 learners) and a larger collaborative area (for groups of up to 5-6 learners), this zone concentrates on creating spaces for students to work in small to medium size groups. By cleverly using furniture that encourages interaction, we give students a sense of belonging, whilst allowing them to have their own personal space.

Dynamic Zone

The main difference in the Dynamic Zone is that this area provides the option of standing. Standing is proving to be an increasingly popular way of encouraging student engagement as it allows for better sight lines and the feeling of ‘being closer’. Studies have shown that when students stand for all or part of a class, there is a surprising decrease in negative behaviour and engagement can be increased by as much as 7 minutes an hour! These dynamic spaces should also give the option of sitting to give students a chance to rest their legs.
