Selecting the Correct Education Furniture | Westcountry Group

Children in the UK spend 32½ hours per week in school – not counting extra-curricular activities – and much of that time is spent in a classroom. Getting the right education furniture in place is essential for both their physical and mental well-being.

Here at Westcountry Group, we have more than 45 years of experience supplying and fitting out furniture for schools across the South of England. Here are just some of the reasons choosing the appropriate classroom furniture is an absolute must:

Classroom Chairs

As an adult, you likely already know the effect bad posture can have on your back. Most workplaces insist on chairs with plenty of support for your lumbar region to prevent pain and injury. In schools, this is an even more important consideration. Good posture practices in a young person’s formative years doesn’t just benefit them in the short term, but improves their physical growth for the future. Ergonomic, adjustable chairs are a sound investment for the safety and wellbeing of all your pupils.

Classroom Desks

Whilst desks have less of an impact on a student’s posture than their chair, they remain a key part of any classroom set up. With posture-supporting chairs, you need desks that match. Plenty of leg room is essential, of course, but room to work is also important. While you are, of course, limited by the physical size of your classroom, contoured desks give students a larger desktop area, without taking up any more space in the room.

Classroom Layout

Once your students have chairs and desks that they can work at comfortably, the other question is how to arrange them. The traditional layout of desks arranged in rows and columns is still used in many educational establishments, but there may be a more effective use of your resources. Clusters of desks seating 6-8 students have been shown to encourage greater teamwork and independent learning. Similarly, a horseshoe layout with the teacher or whiteboard as its focal point ensures all eyes are on the subject at hand. Specialist classrooms, like science rooms, art rooms, and computer labs will, of course, require their own unique set-up.
