Is your school sitting comfortably?

Positive posture – positive mindset – positive results!
“There is growing recognition that if students feel more comfortable and able to concentrate, they are more engaged and ready to learn,” says Lorna Taylor, of Children First Physiotherapy.
This statement supports the fact that students who feel comfortable in a chair which supports the natural curvature of their spine perform better in class. This is because they are more upright and therefore more engaged and ready to learn and also feel empowered when seated in an upright position. A sense of empowerment leads to a greater sense of self-confidence, leading to pupils that have the confidence they need to get great results.
With studies showing that children who have had back pain are four times as likely to experience it again as an adult, it’s high time to give our students the proper back support they deserve.
Do you have students that just never sit still? Wonder what their problem is? Perhaps they are uncomfortable sitting on that chair. They could well be. Research by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, Swansea, found that 72% of primary and 64% of secondary children reported experiencing back pain whilst at school. This puts the onus on staff to ensure that each and every pupil has a quality chair that accurately reflects their spines natural shape.

But it’s not only about the students. What about the teaching staff whose older backs need some TLC as well?
Believe it or not, sitting comfortably can have a noticeable effect upon our attitude. Seated comfortably, we feel more positive and we are also more likely to remember positive memories. This can only have a positive effect on our classroom performance and results! We can forget the time that child put an ink cartridge in the fish tank or nearly blew up the science lab, and savour the good memories!
Using non-ergonomic furniture restricts the natural movement of the body and encourages poor posture which can in turn lead to damage and pain in the lower back. So a supportive chair such as our popular Score Operator chair pictured above (page 228 of our furniture catalogue) which encourages correct posture and lets the spine rest in its natural curvature can really provide a major benefit both in the teaching environment where concentration is key and in relaxing at breakout after a busy lesson.
