Important Features of Sixth Form Design | Westcountry Group

When students complete their GCSE year many choose to continue their education in sixth form, whether in their own school or at a local college. This is an important stage in a young person’s life as they are starting to make their own decisions, perhaps for the first time, as they head towards adulthood. One of those decisions will be where to study for their A-Levels or other qualifications. While there are many things to weigh up in terms of course content, the reputation of the school or college, who among their peer group will be attending and so on. However, a key consideration among students is the school or college interior design.

That certainly makes sense – after all, who wants to spend two years in a learning environment that isn’t conducive to studying? Here at Westcountry Group we have decades of combined experience providing interior design for educational facilities across the South of England. These are just some of the important features to include if you want an effective sixth form design.

Modern and contemporary furniture

Your sixth form students are young adults, who want a college environment that feels vibrant and up-to-date. Decades old tables, chairs, and other school furniture just isn’t going to cut it. By investing in contemporary furniture for your college interior design, you are sending a clear message that you are care about the comfort of your students.

Study booths

Different students have different ways of studying. Introducing booths into your sixth form, either in the library or a dedicated study area, can be helpful for those students who work better alone or in pairs, as they minimise outside distractions.

Social study areas

The flipside of that, of course, is to include group study spaces for your sixth formers. Less formal study rooms give your students the opportunity to work on group projects outside of the classroom, or study with friends and classmates. With the right design, you can incorporate these social areas into the school or college dining room.

Dining facilities

Combine your canteen with a group study area by utilising space-saving foldaway tables and benches, as well as easy-to-store mobile furniture. This lets you transform the space from one to the other with little effort. Since your sixth formers are young adults, why not incorporate bistro tables or an on-site coffee shop?

Breakout areas

Sixth form can’t be all work, all the time. Students need some time to take a breather and gather their thoughts during an important point in their educational career. Breakout areas are ideal for this, providing a haven for students within the school or college grounds.
