What are the Advantages of Teaching Walls?
Feb 22, 2023 • 3 minutes
Teaching walls are a popular addition to many school classrooms, as they provide a bespoke storage solution that makes the most of available space. Sometime referred to in the trade as media walls or learning walls, they combine ample storage space with essential teaching tools and equipment, such as whiteboard panels, touchscreen TVs, interactive whiteboards, and projectors.
In this article, we’re going to discuss some of the advantages of teaching walls, with reference to some of the educational interior design work we have performed for schools and colleges across the South West and South East of England.
A More Efficient Storage Solution
In a traditional classroom environment you often find storage space scattered about the room, with storage bins, shelves, cabinets, and more arranged throughout the classroom. With a teaching wall everything is integrated into the front wall, making it easier for teachers and their assistants to access and distribute teaching materials, as well as freeing up the rest of the classroom and providing more space for students. This is particularly useful for schools where space is at a premium, such as St Johns Beaumont independent school in Old Windsor, Berkshire.
Fewer Distractions
With a teaching wall, everything is behind closed doors, which means there are fewer things for your students to get distracted by. With no more bits of equipment or teaching supplies dotted around the room to catch a pupil’s attention when they should be listening to the teacher, it’s easier to get them to focus on the work at hand. This was a key concern of the staff at Ashton Keynes primary school in Swindon, Wiltshire when they hired our classroom designers to fit-out three new-build classrooms for them.
A Central Focus
Teaching walls ensure that the teacher is the focal point of the classroom. Taking up the whole of the front wall, wherever students are sat in the room, they will be able to see their teacher or the work they have put up on the whiteboard or touchscreen. With other layouts, that’s not always possible, with teachers sometimes corralled into one corner of the room with their teaching aids, making it difficult for all students to get an equally effective view of the lesson. When we set up a pair of science labs for St George’s College in Weybridge, Surrey, that was one of the things we wanted to achieve – a way to steer student focus towards the front of the lab. Our teaching walls were the perfect solution.
An Exciting New Look
Put simply, teaching walls make any classroom look smart, exciting, and state-of-the-art. They can be tailored to meet the needs of any particular classroom layout, even snaking around corners, behind supporting pillars and radiators, or shaped to fill a pitched ceiling. You can incorporate different colours, patterns, and designs to reinforce your school branding, as we did with Totnes St Johns primary school in Totnes, Devon who wanted us to incorporate the school’s forest theme.
