Office Design Trends for 2023

The office environment in 2023 is a different beast entirely to what it was even 5 years ago. Between the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lock downs, workplaces across the country underwent a seismic shift in terms of how they were utilised by staff and management alike. Working from home, telecommuting, and hybrid working patterns have all had a part to play in that change, as has the average workers expectation of a greater work-life balance.

But what does this mean for office interior design as we head into a new year? These are some of the trends that we have identified as commercial interior design specialists:

Embrace hybrid working

With many staff members working from home during the pandemic, the idea of spending 5 days a week in an office has lost what appeal it might have once had. As an employer, you should embrace that change. Have smart screens set up in conference and meeting rooms to allow staff to engage remotely during meetings and presentations. Provide work laptops that can be used at home and in the office so they always have the IT resources they need. If your team members come in on set days during the week, encourage desk-sharing to reduce the amount of office furniture and open up some space in the workplace.

Biophilic design

If that word means nothing to you, don’t worry. While it’s been gaining traction lately in the office interior design world, biophilic design remains a relatively recent concept. In essence, it’s about bringing outdoor spaces into indoor spaces or, more specifically, merging nature with the workplace. A typical example is to introduce plenty of plants and other greenery into the office, but other natural materials such as wood, sand, and stone are also good things to consider. Colour schemes that reflect nature can also help create the effect.

Sustainability

Another side effect of the pandemic is that we all became more aware of our impact on the environment, both as individuals and corporations. This has lead to a significant uptick in the number of companies using sustainable materials in their office design. Recycled (or, at least, recyclable) components are a good way of demonstrating your green credentials to customers and business partners, as well as showing your employees that you care.

Workplace diversity

A key consideration for the modern workplace is the idea of mental well-being. Not everybody is equally productive in the same work environment. While some people thrive in open-plan offices where they get to interact with colleagues, others find the noise and chatter both a distraction and an emotional drain. To create a productive work environment for all, you need to consider the needs of all members of staff, and avoid the mistake of trying to find a one-size-fits-all solution.

The right office furniture

As well as mental well-being, physical well-being is also important. Providing office chairs that deliver the right postural support is crucial, but you shouldn’t overlook other types of office furniture. If your employees want to be physically active, consider introducing standing desk. Alternatively, get the best of both worlds by using mechanical desks that can raise or lower the height of their tabletop.
